Choosing the right collar can be harder than you think. Various materials are available, including leather dog collars, nylon dog collars, and quick release dog collars. Collars also come in various colours from pink, blue, tartan to black or tan.

Dog collars come in various sizes and various lengths and are made for any type of dog, whether it is a puppy or adult dog. A leather dog collar is strong, durable and long lasting, whereas nylon collars will last, but can often fray when they get wet and take time to dry out.

Buying a cheap collar doesn't necessary mean it is a good dog collar. In many cases, the cheaper collar break quickly early on, especially when your dog pulls hard, breaking free. Can you afford to lose him or her?

Choosing the right dog collar is not just about looks or colour. Don't choose a red diamante collar if it is cheap, as very often it means the cheap plastic it will probably be made of will snap easily.

If you have a Staffordshire bull terrier or rottweiller, consider a nice studded collar rather than a diamante collar, it will be much better looking for this large breed of dog. If you own a thinner breed, such as a greyhound or whippit, there are specific collars designed for their slender bodies.

During obedience training, a short, soft, braided leather lead with a loop handle and a clip to attach to the collar is usually used. They are about 4 feet in length and the softness enables the trainer to fold the leash into a shorter length and the braiding allows a firmer grip.

Remember that a lead is not just a lead. Special training leads are available to help with off lead work as are leads to help stop your dog pulling. Extendable or even retractable leads are also available giving your dog a bit of freedom without actually being off lead.

Choosing a leather dog collar is important for the health of your dog. Make sure you invest in the right lead.
